Watercolor Pencils on Fabric Technique Class

9am to 4pm
Instructor by Angela McPherson
Total Cost $70
to include kit
Samples may vary from kit
Student will need to purchase either Watercolor Pencils or Water-soluble Wax Crayons (think of this as your fabric that you would purchase for any other class, and you can always purchase more than one type or larger sets). Here is what is suggested which Angela has tested them and found that they are suitable for painting on fabric (note that these were all purchased on Amazon so please order ahead or find a store that carries them of your choice).
***Please note we are looking for watercolor or water-soluble sets and ensure your set has a white and black colors in it. When I went to Amazon and typed in watercolor for Prismacolor watercolor pencils it led me to their normal color pencils, and I bought a 150-color set that was not water-soluble. Please pay attention before you purchase your water-soluble color set. The more colors the better your experience may be or buy smaller sets of a few different brands for your own testing capability.
Suggested Sets (you only need one for the class but like fabric it never hurts to have a little stash). Angela has prewashed and washed samples so you can make your purchase decision off that to include more watercolor pencils then listed below.
- Zenacolor Watercolor Pencils (Angela’s favorite because of results and price point) you can get a 120-color set for under $30 this is one of my favorite brands so far for softer colors and blends well.
- Prismacolor Premier Water-Soluble (can be found at Walmart and Hobby Lobby 12 count for under $25) (Does not blend on fabric well but bright colors. This one can cost a little more but because it doesn’t blend well, I’d get a 24-color set or larger if possible. Can be found on Amazon 24 set for under $25.)
- Neocolor II Water-soluble Crayon (Caran d’Ache) (under $25 for a 15-color set… get the set you want. These color nicely on fabric but getting points is a little harder)
- Inktense Watercolor Pencils (Derwent) (This set doesn’t say water-soluble, but it is (just don’t get the lightfast because that one is not water-soluble). A 24-color set is under $40. These are ink and are permanent. Although, I prefer the Zenacolor Watercolor pencils, Inktense Watercolor Pencils have their place too. You can paint on clothes, shoes, jeans… it’s just different and very intense. Inktense also has blocks… even this product has its place in my sewing room.)
- You are more than welcome to try something else or maybe you already own a water-soluble pencils/crayons that you can bring with you. I’ll have my different brands with me for those who want to test their options.
Techniques that will be taught:
- Different Shading (Light, Medium, Dark)
- Gradient (dark to light, light to dark)
- Blending
- Dry on Wet
- Wet pencil on brush
- Wet on Wet
- Drawing Lines
- Wet Pencil on Fabric
- Dry on Dry then Brush Aloe on
- Shadow and highlight Blending
Your Paid Kit (included with the class price) will include:
- 1 Practice technique fabric pre-printed from Spoonflower
- 1 Practice pre-printed flowers on fabric from Spoonflower
- 2 small/medium, embroidered samples to watercolor on
Instructor will have paper plates, bushes, paint well, water cup, aloe vera gel, clip boards, stabilizer, hand towels and anything else thought of last minute.
Items to bring to class:
- Watercolor Pencils or Water- Water-soluble Crayon set(s) you have purchased.
- Wear older clothes or an apron (I will have a few aprons if you forget)
- A big smile and be prepared to have fun and relax
*Note: Clear Aloe can be found in the make-up section at Walmart, or you can find bigger bottles on Amazon. All watercolor pencils Angela bought were from Amazon. However, Hobby Lobby does have a small set of Inktense and Prismacolor watercolor pencils.
