11-20-2021: Ruler Work Class by Penny Olive
Ruler Work Class Information Sheet
Taught by Penny Olive
This class will be fun! The quilting industry has been flooded with all types of rulers/templates so to
keep your cost low, I will be bringing every ruler I have for you to try using. I have plenty of straight and
curved rulers as well as several specialty rulers. However, if you have your own rulers/templates,
please bring those so you can experiment with, and learn to use, what you personally own. No ruler
purchase will be required for this class though several will be available for optional purchase. Those
will be the ones I consider my “favorites” and most useful in my quilting.
The focus of this class is the use of rulers with your domestic sewing machine. However, most of the
information in this class is transferable to your sit down or longarm machine. Here is a synopsis of
what will be covered during your full and fun day of quilting:
●Using rulers / templates on a domestic machine
-Why is a ruler foot needed and the difference between high and low shanks
●How to use rulers and experimenting with using them
●Instruction on, and practice with, using rulers in different ways for quilting blocks, borders
and specialty designs (we will be focusing on using straight and curved rulers)
Because using rulers is still done with free motion , it is preferred that students have done some free
motion quilting or have taken the Basic Free Motion Quilting class taught by Penny Olive.
Times:10:00am – 4:00pm (one hour lunch on your own)
***Please be present at 9:30 am for machine set up
Required supplies:
-Sewing machine in good working order and set for free motion quilting
-Marking tool for light fabric
-Fresh quilting or top stitch needle (80/12 recommended)

specifically for ruler work. Muslin will still work great or any light colored
fat quarter.
-Ruler foot for your specific designated machine
Optional supplies:-Machine extension bed (recommended)
-Machine quilting gloves (I LOVE Machingers) Note: While optional, I find
them extremely helpful when working with rulers/templates

-Straight quilting rulers for marking (one shorter and one longer)
-Note pad and pen/pencil
